The class text for this module is:
Criminological Perspectives, Eugene McLaughlin, isbn 0-7619-4144-4
Firstly we started by listening to a story about a brother in sister in France who decide to have sex together and whether we thought this act was criminal, deviant or OK and the reasons behind why we thought it was one of these three things.
As according to Freud incest in his essay called totem and taboo, incest is a taboo subject. It has been socially unaccepted which is why it is never done. As when man first started out there were only a handful of people so you really did not have a choice who you had sex with. The guilt of this act has been passed down to us throughout the generations which has made it such a taboo subject.
In this module we will be discussing what is criminal and also what is deviant and why is this so. Factors to be considered when determining this are things like culture, religion plays a huge part and is also where many laws come from, relationships to the people around you and who the act might affect. The cohort effect was also discussed which is how you are and behave can be part of the era you were born in. For example people born in the 80s called generation x tend to really only ever think about money.
